Martin Preece, ‘Building Talks’ Podcast: Goodman is pioneering a timber warehouse development at Moorabbin Airport, marking the first mass timber construction project for the industrial property group in the Asia-Pacific region. Located in Mentone, 23km southeast of Melbourne’s CBD, this project will utilise 630 tonnes of sustainably sourced timber to construct four flexible warehouse units totaling 15,600 square metres.
Designed by Goodman Group and part of the $285-million Moorabbin Airport Master Plan, this development is expected to cut embodied carbon by 24% compared to traditional steel structures. The project will also feature a 400kW rooftop solar array, eight electric vehicle charging stations, and smart metering for energy management.
This innovative construction will generate 175 jobs and is slated for completion by November. The master plan includes new and upgraded training sites, additional apron pavement, and provisions for sustainable aviation initiatives. The project aims to increase the airport’s economic benefit by 38% annually by 2029.
Goodman’s CEO Jason Little highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, noting that this project aligns with their goals of providing low-carbon, resilient infrastructure. Moorabbin Airport’s CEO Paul Ferguson also emphasized the aerodrome’s ongoing environmental efforts, including significant solar installations and water recycling initiatives.
Recent research by JLL shows a rising demand for sustainable warehousing in Australia, driven by regulatory pressures and growing consumer expectations. The study found that 60 of Australia’s top 100 logistics and industrial occupiers have set net-zero or interim carbon targets, reflecting a significant shift towards sustainability in the industry.
