Construction sector still waiting for turnaround

The latest non-residential building consent statistics don’t inspire confidence in our sector just yet, but the second half of 2025 is when an uplift is possible.

In the year ended January 2025, non-residential building consents totalled $8.9 billion, down 9.7 percent from the year ended January 2024. This series can be influenced by price changes – non-residential construction prices (as measured by the capital goods price index) were up 2.5 percent in the year ended December 2024.

In the year ended January 2025, the non-residential building types with the highest values were:

  • offices, administration, and public transport buildings at $1.8 billion (up 18 percent)
  • hospitals, nursing homes, and health buildings at $1.3 billion (down 9.4 percent)
  • storage buildings at $1.2 billion (down 22 percent).
