Construction wraps up at Khupkhahpay’ay in Vancouver

3 June 2025

As construction wraps up at Khupkhahpay’ay on Frances Street in Vancouver with the nine-story building now topped off and fully enclosed – we’re sharing a look back at the mass timber installation during earlier phases of the project.

This 81-unit building features prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) floors and façade panels inspired by woven cedar baskets. Using an innovative mass timber envelope system, the prefabricated components reduce the project’s environmental footprint and sped up installation.

Now in the final stretch, Khupkhahpay’ay is set to finish later this year, and upon opening, will serve as dedicated social housing for First Nations residents. The building will include community-focused amenities like gathering spaces, a sweat lodge, a rooftop play area for children, and gardens for residents to grow their own food.

Welcome

Greetings for another Tuesday mass timber update. We’re delighted to say there are only a few seats left for our Christchurch seminar and site visit. Click here to register now!

We’re keen to showcase more mass timber building projects around the regions. If you know of a mass timber project under construction and the project team is happy to host a group, please call and we’ll see if we make it work.

Thanks to those of you’ve offered presentations for our national conference on 4-5 November. We’ve already received a good mix of case study offers and can take 3-4 more if you’re keen.

With the building costs and tight Government budgets making New Zealand’s planned hospital builds more challenging, do you think there is a place for lobbying to build parts of these new assets with exposed mass timber, as biophilic environments are proven to speed recoveries.  How do we do it; got any suggestions? Is there a role for a group of AEC leaders who can make a case for using more mass timber in health facilities?
