Harvard is building a new conference centre – and it’s made entirely of wood

17 June 2025

Harvard University is building a new conference centre, to open in autumn 2025. It will be the university’s first campus-wide conference facility – but that’s not the most impressive thing about it. The David Rubenstein Treehouse will be constructed almost entirely from wood.

The conference centre is designed to give visitors the impression of being “up in the canopy”. It uses a rare type of frame, made from “engineered wood”, and will feature a wraparound balcony on the upper levels and an abundance of natural light.

Conference facilities are often insular, energy-intensive buildings that are closed off from their surroundings. The Treehouse conference center aims to establish a very different kind of hub for convening at Harvard University: a low-carbon destination that energizes conversation, collaboration, and the wider neighborhood through embracing its community and outdoor environment. With an expressive mass timber structure, the first on Harvard’s campus, the Treehouse also visibly models a greener way of building for Boston and institutions worldwide.

WoodWorks Issue – 17 Jun 2025

Welcome

Greetings for another Tuesday mass timber update. This week we begin with photos and a recap of our WoodWorks South Seminar and Site Visit which happened in Christchurch last week. Next we have an informative article about how important managing moisture on a building site is for maintaining the hardness of screws. From the northern hemisphere, Harvard University is building a ‘treehouse’ conference centre made almost entirely from wood. Check out an eye-catching unsupported CLT spiral staircase from the KF Aerospace Centre in Canada. Finally, view the GETS tender for new, transportable, modular inpatient units for Health New Zealand.

The next WoodWorks event is our annual conference being held in Rotorua on 4-5 November. If you have an innovative local project to share, please get in touch, as we have space for a couple more speakers.
