Great to see Ngā Kāinga Anamata developed by Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities being celebrated at the virtual pavilion for Build Better Now at COP26 – UN Climate Change Conference now open to the public, showcasing pioneering building projects from around the world.
The 5 Systems programme was gifted the Māori name Ngā Kāinga Anamata or “Homes of the Future” to reflect its twin mission of building homes to 2030 standards today and by incorporating the values of New Zealand’s indigenous culture into the programme. This is a social housing programme led by ‘Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities’, the New Zealand Government’s Urban Development Authority, and is leading the Government’s transformational carbon mitigation programme for the building sector, ‘Building for Climate Change’.
The programme will develop five apartment buildings almost identical but for different structural systems – steel, concrete, light frame timber, mass/cross-laminated timber (CLT), and a light/mass timber highbrid. Each building will achieve Passivhaus Certification and have solar panels to provide tenants with free electricity. Modern methods of construction such as offsite prefabrication are also being used.
