New Carbon Tool for Architects

28 October 2025

A new publicly available resource in the form of an online carbon tool was launched last month.

The National Embodied Carbon Repository, or NECO2, went live on 24 September. It provides a searchable database of building products, from plasterboard and medium-density fibreboard (MDF) to steel and timber. NECO2 is a joint venture between the Building Research Association of NZ (BRANZ) and Construction Information Limited (CIL), trading as Masterspec.

Using the tool could help designers to reduce New Zealand’s building emissions. It’s creators say the new tool for the building and design industry could help halve the embedded carbon footprint of a building.

WoodWorks Issue – 28 Oct 2025

Welcome

Greetings from your WoodWorks team. Very cool to hear that Punangairi – the Visitor Centre in Punakaiki, designed by Sheppard and Rout Architects, is a winner in the international BLT Built Design Awards.  We’re only a week away from our next event, WoodWorks Conference, 4-5 November in Rotorua. There are still a few places left but you’ll need to get in quick.

  • Paradise, is a six-storey, office building developed by Bywater, and is London’s largest mass timber office built with CLT floors and glulam beams on a hybrid frame.
  • A new resource in the form of an online carbon tool was launched last month – a great resource for architects, engineers and construction managers.
  • 80-metre beautiful glulam arches – spanning the full width of the new Smith Athletic Park facility in the Township of Langley.
