New Technical Tall Timber Building Guide

Antony Wood, PHD: I have authored perhaps 30 books over the past decade or two, but this is the one I am most proud of (and most likely to have the biggest impact on the industry!).

The new Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) 334-page Technical Guide: “Tall Timber: Mass Timber for High Rise Buildings” is going to be the definitive guide in the field. The result of two-years of research, funded by the U.S. Forest Service and Binational Softwood Lumber Council, the project sets out to deliver data and detail on what is working and what isn’t with mass timber in the vertical realm, way beyond just an anecdotal “timber is sustainable” messaging. Twenty-five international built case studies, ranging from 8 to 28 stories in height, are delivered in great detail, with data on quantity of materials and carbon savings; architectural and structural detailing; supply chain and delivery to site; construction sequence and efficiencies; fire, acoustic, and thermal treatment; and much more.

There are also 14 discussion sections, ranging from owner-developer motivations for the mass timber approach, through to code and cost considerations – as well as a global audit of all 161 mass timber buildings over eight stories in height, either built, currently under construction or proposed, internationally. As said, this is ground-breaking.
