One for the engineers: Timber connections: Elegant yet strong

For this striking sports arena in Idaho a team of engineers developed a completely unique timber/steel “proscenium arch” efficiently shaped to resolve the heavy forces from half of the 60,000 sf roof, yet elegantly, to the delight of both architect and users. The haunch at the juncture of glulam arch beam and column is triangulated using steel tension and compression struts, creating a hybrid structure which combines appropriately the advantages of both materials.
