“Our Future: Built by Nature”– a new documentary

9 June 2026

“Our Future: Built by Nature”, a documentary from Built by Nature. The film highlights how a sector responsible for almost 40% of global emissions can transform itself from within. Through six real-world examples of the Principles for Responsible Timber Construction, it shows how timber and other biobased materials can deliver scalable, affordable, and locally grounded solutions across diverse geographies and building types.

WoodWorks Issue – 09 Jun 2026

Welcome

Greetings from the WoodWorks team. Auckland Airport has closed its “tennis courts” parking area for construction of a 240-metre domestic jet pier with 12 gates. Using Rotorua-made timber to cut carbon, the new integrated terminal is due to open in 2029.

Sometimes mass timber must compete for projects with other materials. Never for ones like this – only timber has the capacity to impress at scale, both visually and as a ‘natural’ choice for defining a living space!

The Hive in Vancouver—this recently completed 10-storey mass timber office building features a timber perimeter braced frame, honeycomb lattice balconies, and an advanced seismic system with Tectonus dampers, which allows the building to self-center during a seismic event, enhancing its resilience and long-term functionality.

Our Future: Built by Nature is a new documentary from Built by Nature showing how the construction sector can reduce its major emissions footprint through responsible timber construction and other biobased, scalable solutions.

One for the architects — The beauty of timber doesn’t happen without a lot of blood, sweat and applied brain power!
