Binderholz: The 4-storey Båsmo primary school in Norway is a solid timber building that was built to the north-west of the Mo i Rana city centre and is BREEAM certified. It consists of a new school building including a special-needs school department and is designed for some 350 students and 30 teachers. We supplied 1,227 m³ of binderholz CLT BBS, 284 m³ of binderholz glulam and the required fasteners and were also responsible for production modelling.
The building meets passive house standards and is shaped like an open angle, situated in the north-west of a 4,300 m2 plot. This creates a protected exterior area with a view of the existing woods as well as lots of space for varied playing outside under natural light and within sight of the school. Additionally, the exterior areas can be used as formal and informal places of learning.
The primary school’s design includes several different zones. The activities provided by the zones vary from traditional lessons in small and large groups, practical and creative work, instructions and dialogue as well as focused individual teaching or collaboration. Differently sized rooms, a combination between open and closed areas, wall niches and varied furniture create a pleasant learning environment and flexibility.
