Red Stag’s first-of-a-kind modular production line

4 August 2026

On Friday 31 July 2026, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon opened the Southern Hemisphere’s first off-site production line to use Cross Laminated Timber, CLT, as the structure.

The initiative is a collaboration between local industry leader Red Stag, German architecture firm NKBAK and Austria constructor Kaufmann Bausysteme. The initial launch stage is supported financially by MPI’s Primary Sector Growth Fund.

The project name, VoMo stands for ‘volumetric modular’, meaning whole room modules are completed on the production line.

WoodWorks Issue – 04 Aug 2026

Welcome

Greetings from your WoodWorks team. Watch this space: The programme for the next WoodWorks National Conference, taking place in Hastings this year, will be released next week.

Project VoMo — On Friday 31 July 2026, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon opened the Southern Hemisphere’s first off-site production line to use CLT, as the structure.

Here’s an exciting development in mass timber building systems – simple, yet effective! Watch the video and see for yourself this great solution for pre-fab mass timber construction.

Tyson Infanti recently revisited the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Moreton Bay campus and found the exposed glulam timber still performing beautifully, retaining its warmth, precision, and architectural presence after years in service.

A shift in materials prompts closer scrutiny – Canada’s insurance sector says it needs more time and data to assess the long-term risks of mass timber, as the material becomes more common in residential, commercial, and institutional projects.

One for the engineers and connections detailers – RING is a removable structural connector that provides one precise, versatile solution for joining timber, steel, concrete, walls, floors, and post bases.

Vancouver faces serious seismic risk, and many older concrete highrises remain vulnerable despite recent building code updates. By contrast, the new mass-timber Hive office building uses a honeycomb-style exoskeleton and Tectonus seismic dampers to absorb earthquake movement and help the structure resettle afterward.
