Showcase Project: Auckland City Mission Homeground

Several years ago, Stevens Lawson Architects were commissioned by the Auckland City Mission to be the architects for the redevelopment of the Mission’s existing premises on Hobson Street, which are deemed to be ‘sub-standard’ and ‘not fit for purpose.’

The redevelopment, Mission HomeGround, will enable improved delivery of the Mission’s existing services.

Project manager Built Environs have now also begun works on Auckland’s City Mission Home Ground Development. The main structure is cross laminated timber (CLT). When completed, the Auckland City Mission project will be the tallest CLT building in New Zealand.

Fast Facts

  • Levels 4 to 8 – 80 supportive housing apartments, including balconies to each apartment;
  • Roof level – Communal spaces (meeting / conference rooms, roof terrace, greenhouse space etc.) and Plant Rooms;
  • Basement – 3 x tenancies (facing Federal Street), back-of-house facilities and 38 x carparks;
  • Ground floor – café, pharmacy and ACM reception.
  • Level 1 – ACM Offices, meeting rooms, etc.
  • Levels 2 and 3 – Medical treatment centre incl. Dental, GPs, detoxification facilities, patient rooms, and communal areas.

The Mission services are to be extended to provide wrap-around services and support to 80 tenants housed in onsite accommodation. These 80 tenants will all be sourced from the social housing register, with 40 studio apartments dedicated to the chronic homeless. A new Medical Centre and Pharmacy, various assessment rooms, public showers and toilets, a social and medical detox unit with 30 beds, and a large eating area for serving regular meals will also be provided. It will also connect with the wider community by creating community activity rooms and commercial spaces for social enterprise opportunities.
