
Technical highlight: the Centre for Excellence at KF Aerospace, featuring queen-posted mass timber spanning 60 feet.
The aerospace museum is shaped like a plane, with two ‘hangars’ flanking a central two-story hub space. The roof panel trusses of the hub structure consist of a dowel-laminated timber top chord, two steel queen-posts and a tension cable. Curvature was achieved by letting the DLT panels ‘sag’ over two middle supported jigs (and we had 4 carpenters standing at each end!), before installing the cable and locking the curvature in place by tensioning the cables.
The floor of the hub uses an innovative timber-concrete composite queen-post truss floor system, clear-spanning 45’ and controlling deflections and vibrations.
