Timber engineering of tomorrow

29 September 2026

An airship hangar as a blueprint for the timber engineering of tomorrow: it is the gates that make the scale of this structure immediately comprehensible.

But the real highlight of this building is not hidden behind the gates, but above them – the supporting structure made of wood. A half-timbered construction takes over the load-bearing function. The solid roof support shell merely stiffens and adopts the building physics properties. The project combines unusual spans, digital planning, industrial prefabrication and a consistent circular economy.

WoodWorks Issue – 29 Sep 2026

Welcome

Greetings from your WoodWorks team. Who doesn’t like civic buildings especially when they also serve as Grand Prix venues. Woods Bagot aim to set a new benchmark in hybrid civic and sporting infrastructure, and what’s more — mass timber is at the heart of their thinking!

The EVE Music Hall in Croatia looks to be an icon in the making – can’t wait to see the finished photos inside this magnificent space!

Bürogebäude Wood in Grenoble, Switzerland — A six-storey timber office building with branched columns, seismic reinforcement, fire-protected connections, and capacity for loads up to 100 tonnes.

This aircraft hanger uses a timber frame combining wide spans, digital planning, prefabrication, and circular design. The fact that the hangar was awarded the 2024 German Structural Engineering comes as little surprise.
