US WoodWorks Program Active and Growing

Ricky McLain, Mass Timber Structural Engineer & Tall Mass Timber Specialist at WoodWorks US:

The growth of mass timber use in the US has many attributable stakeholders. Developers who seek a differentiated asset which also sustainability and workforce concerns; architects and engineers who desire to build a better future; contractors and installers who are willing to question “the way we’ve always done things” for the sake of innovating and improving; manufacturers and fabricators who are investing large capital amounts to build facilities and deliver quality product to site; industry organizations who inject financial support, technology transfer and expertise; jurisdictions who support adoption of mass timber codes; and many more.

Following the success of the Boston Mass Timber accelerator, which wrapped up earlier this year (see details here: https://shorturl.at/bNQV1) there are other programs currently taking place across the country which continue to support the growth of mass timber.

Here’s a roundup of 3 such mass timber growth programs in the US, taking place right now:

🏢 Mass Timber Competition: Year 2 of this program will announce its winners next week (Oct 19) at the Chicago Architecture Center, which is currently featuring a mass timber exhibit. This competition, funded by the Softwood Lumber Board and U.S. Forest Service will provide a total pool of $2 Million of financial support to a number of selected projects. 🏢 New York City Mass Timber Studio: grants of $25,000 will be awarded to a number of selected projects, to provide technical assistance “to help support active mass timber development projects in the early phases of project planning and design”. Financial support is provided by the Softwood Lumber Board and the U.S. Forest Service, with technical assistance by WoodWorks and advisory support from The American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York and the NYC Department of Buildings. Applications open now 👉  https://lnkd.in/gCchKNfV

🏢 Atlanta Mass Timber Accelerator: this program “will provide selected development teams with technical assistance and funding grants to assess and integrate low carbon mass timber building practices into their projects”. Hosted by the Softwood Lumber Board, U.S. Forest Service and the Georgia Forestry Foundation, with technical project assistance provided by WoodWorks. Application open now, due Nov 10 👉 https://lnkd.in/gRcCQcPT

Spoiler alert: there will be more. Visionary organizations and individuals see the roadmap for growth and are willing to invest the time and resources to make it happen. Follow along, it’s only the beginning.
