Wood is Good – When Understood

26 August 2025

Wood is good – when understood. So true. At Techlam, they’ve spent years delivering engineered timber solutions across Aotearoa and beyond. From bespoke glulam beams to large-scale structural systems, they’ve seen firsthand what makes mass timber projects succeed – or stall. While sustainability and aesthetics often drive interest, cost remains the biggest hurdle. So, how do they make timber not just viable, but the smart choice that truly unlocks its potential for sustainable, beautiful constructions?

Here’s Techlam’s five-step approach to making mass timber affordable, efficient and future-ready:

  1. Experience matters – and it pays off
  2. Get timber experts in early – Waiting until late-stage design to bring in timber specialists often leads to rework, delays, and missed opportunities.
  3. Think slow, build fast – A few extra hours spent refining details in the design phase can save days on site.
  4. Look beyond material costs – A cheaper beam that takes twice as long to install isn’t a bargain.
  5. Dedicated timber project management – Techlam align architects, engineers, and contractors under a unified plan, ensuring that every bolt, bracket, and beam arrives on time and fits first time.

WoodWorks Issue – 26 Aug 2025

Welcome

Greetings from your WoodWorks team. This week to begin our Timber Tuesday we have NZ’s Techlam sharing their top 5 ways to make timber buildings more affordable including how involving wood experts early on in the design process can improve efficiency during construction. Next up in Winnipeg, Canada, check out a tall and slender building using timber diagrid frames to provide spatial optimisation on a limited footprint.

Canberra’s six-storey 23 National Circuit building has been recognised with a commercial architecture award. Jumping to Germany where the Park Arena Furth has been completed using clever and striking engineering to remove the need for complex steel connectors. In Kensington Market, Toronto a new four-storey housing complex will be built. CLT was chosen because it offered more design flexibility.

Registrations are open for our national WoodWorks Conference, 4-5 November in Rotorua. Sign up now to receive the Super Early Bird rate.
