WoodWorks South – Seminar & site visit wrap-up

17 June 2025

It’s a wrap for our sold-out WoodWorks seminar and site visit last week. We’ve received excellent feedback. We’re pleased to bring you photos of our big day out in Christchurch, complete with site visit to 211 High Street, a 4-storey mass timber office building by Portus Property just a block from the new Christchurch stadium.

Our mix of AEC delegates were treated to a variety of case studies:

  • The CLT design with novel connections behind the ABBA Arena as music venue in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London hosting ABBA’s popular avatar show. Peter Corbett from BECA and Oscar Emanual, direct from Xylotek in London.
  • The potential for “AI in Architecture” showcased by Brad Sara, Digital Lead at Warren and Mahoney.
  • Insights into a wide range of mass timber buildings designed by JTB Architects from director Simon Hall.
  • The key role of BIM and use of digital twins in the Court Theatre building project rom Johann Betz from Offsite Design / DigiBuildTM and Craig Greene from Hawkins.
  • Finally, our group got some key construction insights into their new building at 211 High Street from Jono Skinner at Portus Property.

Thanks to our speakers, sponsors and the team at Portus Property for helping us to deliver another innovative and motivating event for growing mass timber in commercial building!

Please contact our team if you would like us to host another seminar and site visit in another region. Right now we’re considering Nelson and Queenstown for upcoming events.

WoodWorks Issue – 17 Jun 2025

Welcome

Greetings for another Tuesday mass timber update. This week we begin with photos and a recap of our WoodWorks South Seminar and Site Visit which happened in Christchurch last week. Next we have an informative article about how important managing moisture on a building site is for maintaining the hardness of screws. From the northern hemisphere, Harvard University is building a ‘treehouse’ conference centre made almost entirely from wood. Check out an eye-catching unsupported CLT spiral staircase from the KF Aerospace Centre in Canada. Finally, view the GETS tender for new, transportable, modular inpatient units for Health New Zealand.

The next WoodWorks event is our annual conference being held in Rotorua on 4-5 November. If you have an innovative local project to share, please get in touch, as we have space for a couple more speakers.
